Fox

Meaning

Cunning, self-interest, and things that serve someone else's purpose. The Fox is the deck's card of caution: something here is not straightforwardly what it claims to be, and there is an agenda under it. It covers deception, but also skilled self-preservation — the Fox is competent, not merely self-serving.

The tradition also connects it to employment and daily work, which sits oddly beside its trickery until you notice that both are about doing what is necessary to survive.

The tone is wary. The Fox rarely announces itself, and its warning is usually to look again rather than to withdraw.

Beside other cards

Almost always the modifier, and one of the deck's strongest. It casts suspicion on its neighbour — Fox + Ring is an agreement with something self-serving in it, Fox + Letter is a message shaped to serve the sender. Beside the Bouquet or the Heart, read for charm that is being used.
